The Ultimate tube amp is a complete tube amp. In other words a tube pre-amp, tube phase inverter, tube power amp and an output transformer followed by the Ultimate Attenuator. It might be useful to know that the UA post section in this application raises the volume instead attenuating it.

The tube amp section is pretty straighforward except for the phase inverter which is not the usual long tailed pair. The Uamp is cathode biased and operates in pure class A, which is unusual for tube amps with more than one power tube. Most go into class A\B operation when two power tubes begin to clip. Because the tube circuit is uniquely designed, strictly for tone instead of power, which is supplied by the high headroom SS section, we can keep the power in the class A realm, solely. The result is tight and toneful. Also, the way the power supply is fed back from the UA to the tube section helps to give a feel to the amp that's like a real big, powerful amp cranked, which it is except infinitely more controllable.
You will feel like you are playing the best JMP on earth at any volume. Actually, 2 JMP's switched through one cabinet thanks to the footswitchable dual volumes.
Of course, like the UA you can get the volume down to bedroom levels and up to large concert hall levels and anywhere in between.

The pre \ modeller input can make the most sterile sounding digital amp or pre amp sound and feel better.

The amp section of the UTA's sound has most often been compared (quite favorably) to a late '60's JMP Marshall 100 watt with EL34's. The UTA uses a 12AX7 and two ECL82's which are combination triode pentodes. In other words, a pre amp tube and a power amp tube in one tube roughly the size of an EL84, for the pre-amp, phase inverter and power amp section of the tube amp. We find it to be a very toneful tube and in this circuit will give any 100 watt metal panel, 4 input non-master volume Marshall more than a run for it's money.
